Dear Sirs

We read with utter dismay and incredulity a press release, issued by the Kennel Club and posted to your web site, that states that you are to prevent puppies that have had skin tacking from being shown.

The pronouncement, made without reference to either breed club, has rightly caused outrage throughout the breed.

Our members are asking a number of pertinent questions regarding how this decision was arrived at, the consequences to the breed and why they, as guardians of this breed, were excluded from this debate.  The frankly cavalier way in which this seems to have been handled is disgraceful and we write to request that the General Committee or its representatives meet with us to explain this decision and the thinking behind it and to answer to the considerable number of (Kennel Club registered) Shar Pei owners who are dedicating their lives to safeguarding and improving this breed.

The health implications of this decision in the short-term are potentially immense and we wonder if the General Committee truly understands what they have done?

Further, the implication that serious SharPei breeders undertake tacking lightly is frankly offensive. Many of us have been working hard to reduce the incidence of tacking and believe that on the whole, less pups are being tacked by those who truly love the breed and have been working hard for many years on this aspect of conformation.

We, together with the Midland Shar Pei Club, plan to hold an open meeting for our members to discuss this decision and would like to use that meeting as an opportunity to put our views to those behind this ruling. If you could let us have dates when representatives will be available, we will make the necessary arrangements.

Yours faithfully

Yvonne Pearson (Acting Secretary)
